John "Jake" Cartwright was born Feb. 24, 1983, in Fort Worth to Johnny and Carolyn Cartwright. He graduated from Western Hills High School in 2001, where he played soccer for four years. He attended Tarleton State University for two years, but transferred to Sam Houston State University, where he graduated in 2006 with a degree in speech communications and a minor in journalism. While at Sam Houston, Jake played men's club soccer while also coaching the team. He also became team manager of the collegiate women's soccer team. After graduation, Jake worked briefly for InSight Global as an IT recruiter before being diagnosed with cancer in April 2007. Jake inspired many people with the blog he kept about his cancer "journey" and he fought hard to beat the cancer until the very end. He was a hero to all who knew him, and he will be deeply missed.Since Jake died on November 30, 2008, Jake's family and a group of his close friends have gotten together occasionally to remember Jake.  We have laughed and cried as we reminisced about his life. During these get-togethers, we discussed continuing raising money for cancer research as Jake had mentioned at both the first and second John Jake Cartwright Benefit Softball Tournaments.  We also discussed raising money to establish scholarships in Jake's name at Western Hills High School, Sam Houston State University, and Tarleton State University.   Finally, we decided to form a non-profit organization with a board of directors and a website. This website and its contents are the result of our meetings. Our hope is that we can help researchers discover a cure for all cancers, help college students with college expenses, and, most importantly, remember Jake.
